Hello Good Callers!

This is our first newsletter of 2022, so we want to start off by saying thank you to everyone that helped us reach our 2021 End Of Year fundraising goal. Because of your support, we were able to achieve our 50k goal! Each contribution enables us to continue empowering communities of color, and improving access to legal support.

Black History Month is Finally Here

While we believe in celebrating our Blackness year round, this month is always meaningful because it serves as a platform to further proclaim the tremendous achievements and strides we've made over the course of history. Every Black History Month it's customary to honor the individuals that advocated for the culture. However, this year, we thought it was important to also highlight crucial turning points in black history that helped shape generations to follow. To take a look back at some of the leaders & events highlighted check out the @goodcallnyc instagram

Bridging The Gap

On February 8th, in collaboration with TechFIN, we donated 42 computers to the families of formerly incarcerated and system impacted individuals in Brooklyn, as an effort to close the digital divide faced by some of NYC’s most underprivileged families. Technology is so embedded in our day-to-day that we often take it for granted. Having access to a computer could be the difference many people need to change the course of their lives for the better. Imagine all the missed opportunities so many of us would’ve faced if not for access to something as simple as a desktop. Special thanks to TechFIN for supporting our efforts in the community and making this opportunity possible.

We're Going to Texas Y'all

This month, we received word that our organization is one of six finalists for the Civic I/O's 2022 Civic Technology Pitch Competition. Next month our team will be traveling to SXSW to pitch Good Call to mayors from across the U.S! If we are selected as winners our team will go on to pitch at the National Mayor's Conference.

It's Important to Know Your Rights

The development of our 24/7 hotline has proven effective that the early application of legal intervention can combat mass incarceration. However, our studies have shown that for Early Legal Intervention to become conventional within the criminal justice sphere, we must broadcast its benefits to vulnerable communities through proactive methods.

Thus, we have developed our citywide Know Your Rights Incubator. Our expert attorneys, along with members of our team, travel to various locations across the city to provide an interactive tutorial on your rights when you encounter police.

We're Going to Be on TV

A film produced by Echoing Green, “Unwavering: The Power of Black Innovation, explores the underfunding of Black-led organizations, while celebrating the perseverance of Black innovators.,”

This documentary film will be available through exclusive screenings and events until a public release in early summer. To view the special, check listings at local NBC affiliate stations.

Meet Our New Youth

We’d like to give a special congratulations to our latest Fellow, Melanie. Like many of our past fellows, Melanie was awarded the Nikita M Price Scholarship Fund because she exemplified a desire and dedication to social justice. She reigns from Brooklyn, NY, and joined Good Call because she wanted to gain experience in community organizing. Lastly, we will welcome our 15th intern cohort this March. This dynamic group of interns come from Exalt and have already shown a drive for change. Stay tuned because this year is going to be full of surprises!
